Suggestions for Improvement to F800PRO Firmware

sysop

I’ve been using the F800PRO for a couple days now.  While I do enjoy the device itself, I find it’s WiFi interface woefully lacking and outdated for the tasks at hand.  It’s clear to me that the paradigm for this setup was based upon most people using their smartphone to connect to their dashcam.  However, in 2019, with the advent of in-car android devices and mobile hotspots, that paradigm is at least 2 years out of date.

Here are two suggestions for update:

  1. Modify F800 firmware to alternately be accessible over local network. Currently, the whole process of connecting a smartphone to the F800 is complicated, confusing, and doesn’t always work as documented.  I suggest a far more streamlined procedure. Many cars sold today come “connected”, and all of the telecom providers now sell wifi hotspot devices (usb, odb and standalone) that provide mobile internet access to virtually any car.  If you have a dedicated hotspot, you should be able to connect to the F800 from any device on that local network. In other words, instead of connecting to wifi, then disconnecting, then connecting to the hotspot, then reconnecting to wifi, a user should only have to press one button to connect to F800 from whatever device they are using in the car.  If that device and the F800 are on the same wifi network, then the user should be able to simply and easily access settings, live view, download, etc… with one click.
  2. Modify F800 firmware to utilize cloud storage. Downloading video files from the F800 to smartphone is time consuming.  Manually taking out the sd card is actually faster when you have a large number of files. However, if the F800 can connect to the internet, and therefore the “Cloud”, why can’t it also upload video files to said “Cloud”.  There are a number of cloud storage providers now: Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive, Amazon Drive, Dropbox, etc… If the F800 firmware should be modified to connect to these, then users would be able to selectively upload videos to their cloud accounts while driving -- or parked.

    Hello There,

As we always are working on improving our Dash Cams, we will pass these suggestions regarding the local network and cloud,  to our development team to be potentially implemented in the future.

    Some very good suggestions.

Since leaving the suggestion, I have discovered something about the F800 PRO system.  It currently supports FTP.  That means that there are dozens and dozens of easy ftp client apps in the Google Play Store available right now that can be used to easily download files from the F800.  The problem is, there needs to be an easier way to start the ftpd server.  Right now, you have to telnet to the F800, log in, then issue a command to start the ftpd server.  The server stops as soon as the unit shuts down, and you have to repeat the process in order to start the server up again.

So, I would highly suggest being able to start/stop the FTP server through the F800 user settings interface.

And, speaking of that interface, I think I have an easier way to resolve connecting to the F800: Create a web-based interface!  Allow users to point their browser to the F800 (give it a domain name to make it easy) and allow them to perform all the current settings operations via the web.  Now, you are not restricted to your smartphone, connecting to the F800 wifi and turning on your hotspot, etc...  Just point your browser, enter a password, and go!

A web-based interface immediately solves the connection complexity for 90% of us users!
