My dash cam powers down too quickly in parking mode

This article helps you troubleshoot a THINKWARE dash cam that powers down too quickly in Parking Mode.

Parking settings, power cable type, ACC and constant-power connections, battery protection thresholds, the Off Timer, and vehicle battery age can affect recording.

Note: If your dash cam is not recording while driving, it is because the microSD card displays a memory error or formatting prompt, please refer to My dash cam announces "Memory Card Error".

If your dash cam announces "Parking recording will now start" when turning off the engine but shuts off after only a few minutes or hours in parking mode, follow the battery protection steps below.

Already tried some steps? Jump to:

1.   Adjust Battery Protection Voltage Cut-off

2.   Enable Smart Parking Recording or Energy Saving Mode

3.   Check Vehicle 12V Battery Health

Adjust Battery Protection Voltage Cut-off

All THINKWARE dash cams feature a built-in voltmeter that shuts down power to the dash cam when the vehicle’s 12V battery voltage drops below a selected cut-off threshold.

1. For 12V vehicles, the selectable cut-off range is 11.6V–12.3V (default 12.0V). For 24V vehicles, it is 23.2V–24.6V (default 24.0V). Low-voltage shutdown occurs after voltage remains below the threshold for 5 minutes.

2. Open the THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK app and go to [Dash Cam Settings] > [Record Settings] > [Battery Protection].

3. On newer models, select [Hybrid car] under [Vehicle Type]. On models with manual voltage settings, use 12.0V for HEV or 11.8V–12.0V for PHEV. A high setting such as 12.8V can cut off power immediately after the ignition is turned off.

For more information about the battery protection settings, see Battery Protection (Voltage Cut Off).

Enable Smart Parking Recording or Energy Saving Mode

In high ambient summer heat or low battery conditions, standard Motion Detection mode consumes higher power (~3W–4W), accelerating battery voltage drops.

Note: Smart Parking Recording availability varies by model. Some older models may not include this feature. Check the options shown in your dash cam's Record Settings.

Smart Parking Recording is a thermal protection function. On supported models, when cabin temperature exceeds 65°C during Parking Mode, the dash cam switches to low-power impact recording. Normal Parking Mode resumes at 55°C or below.

Note: Smart Parking Recording can be enabled only when Motion Detection or Time Lapse is selected. When it activates, recording switches to low-power impact recording; the selected Motion Detection or Time Lapse mode does not continue during this period.

1. On models with Smart Parking Recording, open [Record Settings] > [Smart Parking Recording] and select [Enabled].

Low-voltage Long-Time Recording is a separate feature and is not available on every model. If both Thermal Protection and Long-Time Recording appear in your model's Smart Parking settings, that model supports both features. On supported models, Long-Time Recording switches to impact-only recording when voltage is within 0.1V of the cut-off. Thermal Protection support alone does not confirm this feature.

2. For Energy Saving Mode 2.0, change [Parking Mode] to [Energy Saving] to reduce power use and extend parking surveillance.

Note: Energy Saving Mode records impacts only; it does not record motion detection footage.

Check Vehicle 12V Battery Health

1. If the dash cam shuts down after 2 to 5 minutes despite a 12.0V or 11.8V cut-off setting, check the vehicle's 12V battery.

2. Have a licensed mechanic or automotive technician perform a load test on your vehicle's 12V battery.

A degraded vehicle battery may not sustain Parking Mode. Replace an aging battery or install an iVolt Mini or iVolt Xtra Battery Pack, then check parking recording.

None of the above worked

If Parking Mode still does not work after checking app settings, ACC/constant fuse connections, voltage thresholds, and battery health, contact THINKWARE support.
