My dash cam announces "Memory Card Error"

This article helps you troubleshoot Memory Card Error announcements, a solid red LED, and card-related restart loops on your THINKWARE dash cam.

Repeated overwriting, card compatibility, card age, or an SD adapter's write-protection switch can affect memory card operation.

Note: If the dash cam starts without the card but reports "Memory Card Error" or restarts with it inserted, follow the card checks below.

If you hear "Memory Card Error" or "System error occurred, system will now restart", see a solid red LED, or encounter "Error retrieving firmware data", follow these steps.

Already tried some steps? Jump to:

1.   Perform a Boot Test with microSD Card Removed (Basic Cross-Test)

2.   Format the microSD Card via Dash Cam, Mobile App, or PC/Mac

3.   Verify Third-Party microSD Card Compatibility

Perform a Boot Test with microSD Card Removed (Basic Cross-Test)

Note: Why perform this test? Starting the dash cam without its microSD card helps check whether the startup issue occurs only when the card is inserted.

Don't have an alternate microSD card available? Skip directly to Format the microSD Card via Dash Cam, Mobile App, or PC/Mac below.

1. Unplug the main power cable from the DC-IN port on the front camera to turn off the unit.

2. Eject the microSD card from the memory card slot.

3. Reconnect the power cable with the microSD card removed.

4. If the dash cam starts and announces, "Please insert a SD card", continue to Format the microSD Card via Dash Cam, Mobile App, or PC/Mac below.

For detailed formatting instructions, see How to format your microSD card.

5. If a solid red LED and no voice prompts persist with multiple new cards, including on F200 models, refer to About THINKWARE's warranty policy.

6. For troubleshooting complete power loss or non-booting units, see My dash cam does not turn on at all or My dash cam keeps restarting in a boot loop.

Format the microSD Card via Dash Cam, Mobile App, or PC/Mac

If the dash cam still recognizes the card, format it to rebuild system folders and check whether firmware retrieval errors clear.

Caution: Formatting deletes recordings. Back up important footage before formatting.

Format the card using the instructions for your model:

  • U3000 PRO or Q200: Connect in THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, then tap:
[Dash Cam Settings] → [Memory Card Settings] → [Formatting Memory Card] → [Format]
Then tap [Confirm] on U3000 PRO or [OK] on Q200.
  • U3000: Press and hold [REC] + [Wi-Fi] together for 3 seconds.
  • LCD models: Go to [System Settings] → [Format].

Keep power connected until formatting finishes.

For other models and detailed dash cam, Windows, and Mac formatting methods, see How to format your microSD card.

If you hear "Format SD Card Regularly for Data Integrity", format the card and check whether recording resumes.

Important reminder: On models such as Q200, replace the card if "Memory Card Error" returns at the next startup after a successful format.

Verify Third-Party microSD Card Compatibility

THINKWARE dash cams continuously record high-bitrate video at operating temperatures of -10°C to 60°C. Consumer-grade cards, including standard SanDisk Ultra or generic retail cards, may lack the required endurance and Sudden Power Off Recovery (SPOR) support. Check card compatibility if recordings have missing 10-second clips, unreadable files, or restart loops.

Use a compatible genuine THINKWARE microSD card. High Endurance / Max Endurance and U3 / V30 ratings on a third-party card do not guarantee compatibility with your dash cam.

The table below groups dash cam models by their supported minimum and maximum genuine THINKWARE microSD card capacities.

None of the above worked

If the issue continues after testing without a card, formatting on a PC or Mac, unlocking write protection, and trying a new compatible THINKWARE card, contact THINKWARE support.

If "Memory Card Error" returns at the next startup after an in-camera format, including on Q800PRO or Q200, contact THINKWARE support for a warranty assessment.

Please refer to About THINKWARE's warranty policy for warranty requests or technical evaluation.
