Understanding Wireless Apple CarPlay & Wireless Android Auto Connections

Understanding Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

Apple CarPlay is Apple's proprietary technology that allows iPhone users to connect their devices to compatible car infotainment systems. It enables users to access various iPhone features, including navigation, music, messaging, and calls, through the car's display. The connection between the iPhone and the car's infotainment system is typically established via a wired USB connection or wirelessly using Bluetooth.

On the other hand, Android Auto is a version of Google's Android mobile operating system that's specifically designed for use in a car through the car’s infotainment screen. By pairing a modern Android smartphone with your car via Android Auto, you’ll be able to access and use your phone's key features safely through the car's touchscreen, digital dashboard, buttons, and in-car microphone.

Incompatibility

The root of the compatibility issue lies in the fact that both Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto and Thinkware dash cams attempt to establish Wi-Fi connections simultaneously. When a smartphone is connected to a car's infotainment system via Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, it creates its own Wi-Fi network to communicate with the system. Most of the time prioritizes the connection from the car's infotainment system, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. However, multiple Wi-Fi networks can’t be connected to smartphones at the same time. Due to this clash, users are often unable to use Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto and the Thinkware dash cam simultaneously.

Potential Workarounds

While the conflict between Wireless Apple CarPlay /Android Auto and Thinkware dash cams persists, there are a few workarounds that users can consider:

  • Use a wired connection: If your car's infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay via a wired connection, you can connect your iPhone using a Lightning cable. This eliminates the need for the iPhone to create its own Wi-Fi network, allowing the Thinkware dash cam to establish its connection simultaneously.
  • Disable the Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto when connecting to the  Thinkware Dash Cam on your smartphone.
