This article explains how to troubleshoot missing rear camera recordings or a black screen in Live View on your THINKWARE dash cam.
Note: When connecting or disconnecting the rear camera cable, always power off the dash cam main unit first by unplugging the main power cable. Plugging in the rear camera while the front camera is actively powered will trigger a system restart and announce, "Rear camera connected, the system will now restart".
If your rear camera has never recorded video since installation, displays a blank black screen in Live View, or fails to create _R video files on the microSD card, follow the installation verification steps below.
Already tried some steps? Jump to:
1. Verify Rear Camera Cable is Connected to the Rear Camera Input (Not GPS or RADAR)
2. Check Cable End Orientation Labels (Front 'F' vs Rear 'R')
3. Verify Model Compatibility for Separately Purchased Rear Cameras
4. Check Multiplexer Box Configuration (Multi-Channel Setups)
5. Check the resolution setting for accessory cameras (U1000 PRO / Q850 PRO)
Verify Rear Camera Cable is Connected to the Rear Camera Input (Not GPS or RADAR)
1. On the front main unit, inspect which port the rear camera cable is plugged into.
Rear camera connector shapes vary by model. Use the cable listed for your dash cam and check the port label; a matching shape alone does not confirm compatibility.
2. Connect the cable to the rear camera input identified for your model, such as V-IN or R-CAM. Plugging the rear camera into the GPS or RADAR port prevents camera recognition and will not record video.
Check Cable End Orientation Labels (Front 'F' vs Rear 'R')
On U3000 PRO and U3000, the rear camera cable is directional and has F/R labels near the connector tips.
1. Front End (Marked 'F' or FRONT): Must be connected to the front main unit's V-IN port.
2. Rear End (Marked 'R' or REAR): Must be connected to the rear camera unit port.
3. If the cable runs backward through the headliner, unplug both ends, reverse its direction, and reconnect.
4. Check whether the front unit recognizes the rear camera.
Verify Model Compatibility for Separately Purchased Rear Cameras
1. If you purchased a rear camera separately from your front dash cam unit, verify that the rear camera model number is compatible with your front camera chassis.
Rear cameras are engineered with specific image sensors and processing chipsets matched with specific mainboards (e.g., a U1000 2K rear camera is not compatible with a Q800 PRO or F200 PRO front camera).
Match the cable item and front dash cam models below. Matching connector shapes alone does not confirm cable compatibility.
| Front Dash Cam Models | Cable Connector Ends |
|---|---|
| U3000, U3000 PRO | Mini USB / Mini USB (Marked F/R) |
| U1000 PRO, U1000 Plus, XD350 | (HDMI Micro-USB) Angled Micro 5-Pin / Micro 5-Pin (A) |

Note: Use the genuine rear camera cable specified for your model. Matching connector types do not make a general-purpose USB or audio cable a compatible replacement.
2. If the rear camera is incompatible, it will not record or appear in [Live View]. Contact THINKWARE support to confirm part compatibility.
Check Multiplexer Box Configuration (Multi-Channel Setups)
1. If your vehicle utilizes a THINKWARE Multiplexer Box (MB-100) for 3-channel, 4-channel, or 5-channel commercial recording, inspect the Multiplexer main module under the passenger seat.
2. Ensure the the V-OUT cable connects from the Multiplexer to the front camera's V-IN port.
3. Verify that the physical Channel Toggle Switch on the bottom of the Multiplexer Box matches your installed camera count (e.g., set to 4-Channel mode).
4. Ensure the Yellow BATTERY wire of the Multiplexer power harness is connected to constant 12V power. If the Multiplexer loses power, rear and side cameras will fail to display in Live View. See How to install the Multiplexer box.
Check the resolution setting for accessory cameras (U1000 PRO / Q850 PRO)
This step applies only to U1000 PRO and Q850 PRO setups using a Multiplexer Box or an accessory camera (such as a waterproof exterior camera).
If the resolution combination selected on the front main unit is not compatible with the connected accessory camera, the camera image may not appear. Select a combination with a rear-camera resolution supported by the accessory before connecting it.
Caution: Changing the resolution can erase all recordings. Back up important recordings before changing this setting.
The table below shows the resolution combinations for each connected camera or accessory.

1. Turn on the vehicle ignition and connect your dash cam to the THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK app. For connection instructions, see How to connect your dash cam to THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK app.
2. Open [Dash Cam Settings] > [Camera Settings], then select [Resolution], as shown in your app.
3. Select a resolution supported by the connected camera or Multiplexer Box.
4. Read and confirm the warning about deleting all recordings.
5. Tap the back arrow in the top-left corner to save your settings.
6. Wait for the dash cam to restart after changing the resolution setting.
Note: If the camera is still not recognized after the resolution change and restart, disconnecting and reconnecting its cable may help the dash cam recognize it.
7. Reconnect to the app and open [Live View] to check whether the rear camera image appears.
None of the above worked
If you have reseated both cable ends, checked the rear camera input port, F/R orientation, pinch points, compatibility, and image rotation, but disconnection prompts or a black screen continues across restarts, please contact THINKWARE support.
