My dash cam shows the wrong year or date

This article helps you troubleshoot a THINKWARE dash cam that shows the wrong year or date.

Check Time Zone and Daylight-Saving Time settings, GPS reception, the mobile app, and firmware when timestamps are incorrect. Metallic windshield tint and underground parking can obstruct GPS reception.

Note: THINKWARE dash cams automatically sync the exact date and time from GPS satellite atomic clocks upon acquiring a signal. You do not need to manually set the calendar date on GPS-equipped models—only the Time Zone (UTC offset) and Daylight-Saving Time toggle must be configured.

If the recorded date shows a year such as 2048 or 2068, or a manufacture date such as 2018 or 2021, follow these steps.

1.   Reset GPS via Mobile App to Sync Time

2.   Update Dash Cam Firmware

Reset GPS via Mobile App to Sync Time

1. Connect your smartphone to the dash cam via the THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK app (or THINKWARE CLOUD app for legacy models).

2. In THINKWARE CLOUD or THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, open [Dash Cam Info] and select the GPS information arrow.

3. Tap [Reset] (or [Reset GPS]). The GPS status will revert to "Connecting".

4. Keep the vehicle outdoors under a clear sky and allow up to 5 minutes for the GPS to reconnect.

5. After you hear "GPS Connected", check whether the date and time have synchronized with GPS.

Update Dash Cam Firmware

If the date still shows 2048 or a manufacture date after a GPS reset, update the dash cam firmware.

If your model supports updates through THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, follow these steps.

Caution: Keep the dash cam powered on throughout the update.

1. Turn on the dash cam, open THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, and tap [Connect to the Dash Cam].

2. Tap [Download] when prompted and wait for the download to finish. When “Latest firmware files are available. Do you wish to update?” appears, tap [OK].

3. Tap [Continue] to switch to the dash cam’s Wi-Fi, then tap [Join] when your phone asks to connect to the THINKWARE network.

4. Wait while the firmware is installed. The dash cam will restart and temporarily disconnect from the app. The update is complete when you hear “Update Complete, Continuous Recording will now start”.

If no update prompt appears, go to [More] > [Support] > [Update Firmware] > [Firmware Download], then follow the confirmation and connection steps above.

For detailed instructions or the PC/Mac method if app updates are unavailable, see How to update your dash cam’s firmware.

After the firmware update completes, perform the GPS reset described above and allow up to 5 minutes outdoors under a clear sky for the GPS to reconnect.

Contact Support About Persistent Date Errors

If the date remains incorrect after updating the app and firmware and resetting GPS outdoors, contact THINKWARE support for further assessment.

Provide your dash cam model, firmware version, mobile app version, and a brief description such as "date stuck on 2048" when requesting a warranty assessment.

None of the above worked

If the date or GPS issue continues after resetting GPS, updating the app and firmware, checking time settings, testing outdoors, and checking antenna connections, contact THINKWARE support.

For a warranty exchange request or technical evaluation, see About THINKWARE's warranty policy.
