My video playback shows a black screen with audio only

This article helps you troubleshoot THINKWARE video playback that shows a black screen with audio only.

Phone permissions, a missing photo album, video playback compatibility, wireless interference, or overwritten files can affect video access.

Note: THINKWARE mobile apps do not automatically store dash cam footage in the cloud or phone memory. All video files remain stored on the dash cam's microSD card until you connect via Wi-Fi and explicitly export them to your smartphone's camera roll. Overwritten video files cannot be recovered.

If you attempt to play a video inside the mobile app and hear audio playback while the video screen remains completely black or blank, follow the video rendering workaround steps below.

1.   Download and Play Video via Phone Default Player (Android 14 Workaround)

2.   Update Mobile App, Phone OS, and Dash Cam Firmware

Understand the Two-Step Download & Export Process

1. Connect to the dash cam using Wi-Fi.

Keep your phone screen on and stay connected to the dash cam Wi-Fi until the download finishes.

2. Open [File List], select the video, and tap [Download]. This saves it in the app, not your phone gallery.

3. Open [Downloaded Videos], select the file's options, and tap [Export].

4. Confirm the pop-up notification "Export files to an album" by tapping [OK]. The video is now transferred to your smartphone's camera roll.

Download and Play Video via Phone Default Player (Android 14 Workaround)

High-resolution 4K UHD or 2K QHD video files (from models like U3000 PRO, U3000, Q1000) may encounter video playback compatibility issues during in-app live streaming on select smartphone operating systems (such as Android 14).

1. Download and export the file directly to your smartphone using the two-step export process.

2. Open the exported MP4 file in [Photos], [Gallery], or [Google Photos]. Check whether both video and audio play.

Update Mobile App, Phone OS, and Dash Cam Firmware

1. Check the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to ensure your THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK app is updated to the latest version.

2. Update your smartphone's operating system to the latest software release.

3. Update your dash cam to the latest firmware. For app or PC/Mac instructions, see How to update your dash cam’s firmware.

Note: The THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK app requires iOS 15.0 or later or Android 9.0 or later. For unsupported phones, turn off the dash cam before removing its microSD card, then connect the card to a PC or Mac to access videos.

None of the above worked

If downloads or exports still fail after checking permissions, exporting, testing gallery playback, disabling CarPlay and VPN, and checking the card, contact THINKWARE support.

Required tools: PC or Mac with a suitable card slot, or a compatible card reader or adapter if needed (for copying files directly from the card).

If you urgently need incident footage and the app cannot export it, turn off the dash cam, remove its microSD card, and connect it to a PC or Mac using a suitable card slot or reader. Copy the MP4 files directly.
