My dash cam is completely silent

This article helps you troubleshoot missing startup chimes, button beeps, or voice announcements from your THINKWARE dash cam.

Note: System voice prompts and button chime volume controls are entirely separate from cabin audio recording settings. If your recorded video files lack cabin audio but the dash cam speaker functions normally, please refer to My video has missing or distorted audio.

Speaker issues can involve muted volume, audio system files after an incomplete firmware update, an incorrect language pack, vehicle ground-loop noise, or speaker and audio-processing operation.

If your main unit turns on and records video normally but produces no startup chime, button press beeps, or safety camera voice alerts, follow the steps below.

1.   Check and Adjust Volume Settings

2.   Perform a microSD Card Format and Factory Reset

3.   Update Dash Cam Firmware

Check and Adjust Volume Settings

1. Turn on the vehicle ignition to power on the dash cam.

2. Open the THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK app on your smartphone and connect to your dash cam via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

3. Navigate to [Dash Cam Settings] > [System Settings] > [Volume].

4. Verify the volume level setting:

  • 0 / OFF: Mutes adjustable voice announcements.
  • 1 / Low, 2 / Medium, 3 / High: Adjusts audio output loudness.

Note: Setting Volume to 0 / OFF mutes adjustable voice announcements, but crucial audio messages remain audible.

5. Select a higher volume level available for your model and tap the back arrow to save. Trigger a voice prompt or button beep to check the speaker output.

  • Non-LCD Dash Cams

For example, on U3000 or Q200:

1. Connect to the dash cam in THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK.

2. Open [Dash Cam Settings] > [System Settings] > [Volume].

3. Select a level above 0.

4. Tap the back arrow to save.

The Voice Recording button controls the microphone in saved videos; it does not adjust speaker volume.

  • Touchscreen LCD Dash Cams

Open your model's on-screen Volume setting and select a higher level. The icon, menu, and available levels vary by model; follow the user guide.

Perform a microSD Card Format and Factory Reset

A temporary system logic lockup can cause the internal audio driver to freeze while video recording continues.

Caution: Formatting erases all files on the microSD card. Back up important recordings before formatting.

1. Format the card using the instructions for your model:

  • U3000 PRO or Q200: Connect in THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, then tap:
[Dash Cam Settings] → [Memory Card Settings] → [Formatting Memory Card] → [Format]
Then tap [Confirm] on U3000 PRO or [OK] on Q200.
  • U3000: Press and hold [REC] + [Wi-Fi] together for 3 seconds.
  • LCD models: Go to [System Settings] → [Format].

Caution: Keep power connected until formatting finishes.

For formatting methods by model, see How to format your microSD card.

Caution: A factory reset erases all files on the microSD card and restores factory default settings. Back up important videos before you reset.

2. Follow the reset method for your model:

  • U3000 PRO, U3000: Press and hold the REC and MIC buttons together until the dash cam beeps.
  • Q200: Press and hold the Wi-Fi and REC buttons together until the dash cam beeps.
  • LCD models: Use the reset option in the on-screen settings menu.

For reset buttons and menus by model, or if the reset does not work, see How to Reset your Dash Cam.

Update Dash Cam Firmware

If speaker audio stops after an interrupted firmware update, try updating the firmware again using the method supported by your model.

For LCD dash cams without Wi-Fi (e.g. X1000, X800, X700), use the PC/Mac method in the firmware article below.

If your model supports updates through THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, follow these steps.

Caution: Keep the dash cam powered on throughout the update.

1. Turn on the dash cam, open THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, and tap [Connect to the Dash Cam].

2. Tap [Download] when prompted and wait for the download to finish. When “Latest firmware files are available. Do you wish to update?” appears, tap [OK].

3. Tap [Continue] to switch to the dash cam’s Wi-Fi, then tap [Join] when your phone asks to connect to the THINKWARE network.

4. Wait till the firmware is installed. The dash cam will restart and temporarily disconnect from the app. The update is complete when you hear “Update Complete, Continuous Recording will now start”.

If no update prompt appears, go to [More] > [Support] > [Update Firmware] > [Firmware Download], then follow the confirmation and connection steps above.

For detailed instructions, troubleshooting, or the PC/Mac method if app updates are unavailable, see How to update your dash cam’s firmware.

The table below summarizes speaker diagnostic causes and required corrective actions.

Audio Symptom Possible Contributing Factor Required Action
Complete Silence (No Beeps/Prompts) Muted adjustable announcements or a temporary audio-system issue Set Volume to High in app; perform factory reset
Foreign Language Prompts Incorrect language setting or regional firmware Check the model's device voice-language setting; verify model and regional firmware
Crackling / Static Noise Vehicle ground-loop noise or speaker output issue Compare with a 12V Car Charger Cable; check the existing ground connection if noise stops
Silent Boot After Firmware Update Interrupted update or an audio-system issue after firmware installation Update through the supported app; see the firmware article for other methods

None of the above worked

If you have checked volume, reset the dash cam, updated firmware, checked language settings, and tested with a 12V Car Charger Cable, but silence or crackling continues, please contact THINKWARE support.
