My speaker produces static or crackling noise

This article helps you troubleshoot static or crackling from your THINKWARE dash cam speaker.

Note: System voice prompts and button chime volume controls are entirely separate from cabin audio recording settings. If your recorded video files lack cabin audio but the dash cam speaker functions normally, please refer to My video has missing or distorted audio.

If your dash cam speaker outputs continuous buzzing, crackling popping sounds, or distorted robotic voice prompts, follow the hardware isolation steps below.

Already tried some steps? Jump to:

1.   Test with 12V Car Charger Cable

2.   Inspect the Speaker Grille for Debris

3.   Reset the Dash Cam

4.   Update Dash Cam Firmware

5.   Test with a Different or New microSD Card

Test with 12V Car Charger Cable

Required tools: THINKWARE 12V Car Charger Cable (for this optional power test).

Note: Ground loops or alternator AC ripples through a Hardwiring Cable or OBD-II Power Cable can produce static through the audio amplifier. A 12V Car Charger Cable helps you compare speaker output with and without the installed vehicle wiring.

Don't have a 12V Car Charger Cable available? Skip directly to Inspect the Speaker Grille for Debris below.

1. Disconnect your Hardwiring Cable or OBD-II Power Cable from the DC-IN port on the dash cam.

2. Temporarily power the main unit using a standard THINKWARE 12V Car Charger Cable plugged into an auxiliary 12V power outlet.

3. Trigger a voice prompt (such as pressing the REC button or adjusting the volume).

4. If static disappears on 12V power, check the Black GND connection and vehicle ground-loop interference. Re-bolt the ground eyelet to clean, unpainted chassis metal.

5. If crackling or popping continues on 12V power, continue to Inspect the Speaker Grille for Debris below.

Inspect the Speaker Grille for Debris

1. Inspect the small speaker grill on the body of the main unit.

2. Ensure no dust, magnetic metal shavings, or mounting adhesive residue has accumulated inside the speaker holes.

3. Clean the grill area using a soft brush or dry cotton swab.

4. If distorted sound or silence continues regardless of power source or volume level, continue with the reset, firmware, and memory card checks below.

Reset the Dash Cam

Caution: A factory reset erases all files on the microSD card and restores factory default settings. Back up important videos before you reset.

Follow the reset method for your model:

  • U3000 PRO, U3000: Press and hold the REC and MIC buttons together until the dash cam beeps.
  • Q200: Press and hold the Wi-Fi and REC buttons together until the dash cam beeps.
  • LCD models: Use the reset option in the on-screen settings menu.

For reset buttons and menus by model, or if the reset does not work, see How to Reset your Dash Cam.

Update Dash Cam Firmware

Re-installing or updating to the latest firmware can clear corrupted audio or system files that may cause speaker noise.

For LCD dash cams without Wi-Fi, use the PC/Mac method in the firmware article below.

If your model supports updates through THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, follow these steps.

Caution: Keep the dash cam powered on throughout the update.

1. Turn on the dash cam, open THINKWARE DASH CAM LINK, and tap [Connect to the Dash Cam].

2. Tap [Download] when prompted and wait for the download to finish. When “Latest firmware files are available. Do you wish to update?” appears, tap [OK].

3. Tap [Continue] to switch to the dash cam’s Wi-Fi, then tap [Join] when your phone asks to connect to the THINKWARE network.

4. Wait while the firmware is installed. The dash cam will restart and temporarily disconnect from the app. The update is complete when you hear “Update Complete, Continuous Recording will now start”.

If no update prompt appears, go to [More] > [Support] > [Update Firmware] > [Firmware Download], then follow the confirmation and connection steps above.

For detailed instructions, troubleshooting, or the PC/Mac method if app updates are unavailable, see How to update your dash cam’s firmware.

Test with a Different or New microSD Card

A degrading or corrupted memory card can cause audio buffer errors and continuous speaker crackling. Insert a fresh high-endurance microSD card, such as an official THINKWARE card or a SanDisk High Endurance card, to check whether the noise stops.

The table below summarizes speaker diagnostic causes and required corrective actions.

Audio Symptom Possible Contributing Factor Required Action
Complete Silence (No Beeps/Prompts) Muted adjustable announcements or a temporary audio-system issue Set Volume to High in app; perform factory reset
Foreign Language Prompts Incorrect language setting or regional firmware Check the model's device voice-language setting; verify model and regional firmware
Crackling / Static Noise Vehicle ground-loop noise or speaker output issue Compare with a 12V Car Charger Cable; check the existing ground connection if noise stops
Silent Boot After Firmware Update Interrupted update or an audio-system issue after firmware installation Update through the supported app; see the firmware article for other methods

None of the above worked

If you have checked volume, reset the dash cam, updated firmware, checked language settings, and tested with a 12V Car Charger Cable, but silence or crackling continues, please contact THINKWARE support.
